Hawaii Navy Base Housing - I know how difficult it can be for a DoD family to move to Hawaii because I did it myself a few years ago. I also help find homes for military families relocating to Hawaii, so I learn from their experience. A military move to Hawaii can be confusing. It's an OCONUS post, but it's still a state, so it seems like it's in a no-man's land of rules and planning. Trying to decide which parts of Hawaii's joint travel rules apply can be an education in itself.

It depends on various factors such as the degree of accommodation in the military, marital status and number of dependents. Married military personnel may live in base housing or receive Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for off-base housing. If you are single, you live on base until you reach a certain rank. To live on base, you pay full BAH for living in military housing. Most likely, all utilities are also included.

To enter a military base as a civilian, you must be escorted by a military member or visit a visitor center. Make sure you have a valid photo ID, such as a passport or driver's license, when you visit the base.

In The Military And Moving To Oahu? Consider These Tips

Another common question is whether civilians can live on the base. In some cases, if there are not enough military personnel or their families to occupy all of the base housing, the housing company may open it up to civilians. This scenario doesn't happen often. However, if you are a military spouse or dependent, you are allowed to live on base.

By living on base, your utilities are usually covered. As long as you don't exceed your home's average energy consumption, you don't have to pay anything. If you use the allotted amount of energy consumption, you must pay for the amount you used. If you stay within this limit, you can save a lot of money on utilities compared to a non-standard home.

Every military member is provided with a primary housing allowance, which they can use for both base housing and off-base housing. Keep in mind that base housing varies depending on your location and is usually more expensive than living on base.

If you can't drive more than 10 minutes, on-base military housing is perfect for you. Nowhere on Oahu is a short note.

If you've lived on a military base before, you know that the rules for living on base in Hawaii are very similar. A commissary, a BX, a gas station, a school, a post office, a parade ground, flagpoles, and a neat row of buildings where no one walks on the grass, let alone parks. "Reville" in the morning, "Kran" in the evening. I understand. At any post on Oahu, with the exception of Little Beach at Hickam, it can be found at Ft. threshold.

The style of the Army base you'll find at Scofield Barracks will also be familiar. Most military housing is built to the same quality as the last post you arrived at - no bells and whistles, but clean and functional. Some of the housing units are newer, the result of BRAC money, while others are older and in need of rehabilitation. There are many websites you can check out for military base housing - such as Island Palm, Base Websites, or the Military Mobile Home Facebook group with user photos of military base housing around the world.

Living on a military base also offers a familiar social scene...and you know what I mean. Everyone is in the same boat, speaks the same language, has kids who are good at making new friends, and have never seen a doorbell or a fence in their lives. If you want to join the ready forum, it is available.

Without obligation, after all, living on a military base is like paying rent. You send BAH to your landlord - Isle of Palms, Hickam Community or Forest City. You'll often pay utilities, hire someone to fix broken items, and personalize and repaint the walls to check the move. In three years you will be gone and it will be as if you were never here.

It's okay to get away from work every now and then (or often). This is especially easy to do in Hawaii. Leave the base and head to the beach or take a brisk walk or head into town for a drink at the resort. If you live far away from work, commuting home can be very relaxing. Go from the falls at Hickam to Kaneo. Exit the tunnels of the Koolau Mountains with spectacular views of Kaneohe Bay. The office you left may be on another planet. Escape in a way you've never done before while living on a military base.

You are certainly welcome here. People who move to Oahu wonder if they'll fit in or feel welcome if they live in "the city." Oahu is a melting pot of cultures and languages, often the source of comedy rather than tension. And Hawaii has a history of imperialism and capitalism that leaves a deep impression.

However, the military community and defense industry are an integral part of the island's culture, lifestyle and economy and enjoy broad community support. You can't go anywhere on Oahu without seeing military decals on cars, military personnel in military uniforms, or military discounts. So, yes, welcome here.

Guide To Hawaii Military Resorts And Recreational Lodging

When you choose to live off a military base, you'll feel like you're living in Hawaii. Maybe you live within walking distance of the beach, or you can look out over the ocean from your lanai, or there's a great hiking trail nearby, or a golf course, or you can buy avocados for papayas with your neighbor, or a great place. find sushi outside your apartment. There are many military housing options available if you are open to them.

It will be possible to rent or buy a house outside the base. There are many factors to consider, but the main difference is financial. With a VA loan, you can buy a home with almost no money out of pocket, and then your BAH goes toward your mortgage payment. This means you're paying yourself instead of paying the landlord, and as the market improves, so does the value of your home.

You will have many opportunities to stay on base in your military career, and I fully understand the desire to make it safe. But I encourage you to get out and try something new, experience this place to the fullest, and embrace your time in Hawaii. You may even fall in love with it and choose to extend your tour or retire.

Given the options, anyone eligible will choose to live at Hickam AFB. Hickam's housing is better, most duty stations are centrally located, and it has a beach, so if you're a low-priority candidate, wait longer. I recently worked with a non-Air Force O-6 family who was waiting to live in Hickam, but was told a 6-12 month wait. Meanwhile... they were only offered income.

Now that you've decided to live in military housing, the question is: Should you rent or buy?
