encore pro hunter

Encore Pro Hunter - One of our favorite deer rifles tested this year was the Thompson/Center Encore Katahdin Pro Hunter ($852). Originally developed to hunt black bear and elk in the thick cover of northern New England, this single-shot, break-action rifle is available in .500 S&W Magnum, .460 S&W Magnum and .45-70 Govt. The A is equipped with 20-inch fluted stainless steel barrels, Flex-Tech synthetic recoil stocks and super-comfortable Sims LimbSaver recoil pads.

By pulling the action lever back, the warehouse tilts up for loading/unloading. An adjustable Williams aperture handles rear sight duties.

Our evaluation rifle was chambered in .460 S&W Magnum. Built on a stainless steel Encore frame, the Pro Hunter barrel will accept all Encore and Pro Hunter barrels, available in four lengths and 15 chambers up to .300 Win. Mag. Barrels are changed by removing the forearm, turning on the hinge pin and lifting the runner. To install a new barrel, reverse the process.

Flex-Tech synthetic stock features rubber inserts in key areas as well as a comfortable Limbsaver butt pad to eliminate felt recoil stings.

Pulling the action lever back with the trigger finger releases the action lock and causes the slide to tilt up and the extractor to partially extract the empty case. After reloading, just close the action. The external hammer must be fully cocked to fire and automatically returns to the half cocked "safe" position when the trigger is released. There is no manual safety. The hammer spur can be rotated 50 degrees to either side to remove an attached scope, making the Katahdin Pro Hunter truly ambidextrous.

The sights consist of a rear- and height-adjustable Williams aperture and ramp-mounted red fiber optic front. The barrel is drilled and tapped for scope mounting, but the scope takes up two of the four mounting holes, so it must be removed to mount an optic.

The Katahdin's 20-inch fluted stainless steel barrel has a Williams fiber optic sight at the muzzle. The lack of a factory muzzle port (to reduce recoil) is our only complaint.

Thompson Center Encore Pro Hunter System Review

The Flex-Tech stock is black with gray sticky rubber inserts over the comb and on both sides before the stock, on the pistol grip and on the forearm. Pivot pins are included at both ends.

Working with the rifle's excellent iron sights, the Katahdin drilled close to 1.5-inch five-shot groups from the bench using Hornady ammunition.

For testing I used Hornady's 200-gr. FTX load (2490 f.p.s./2574 ft. lbs.), fired from the bench at 50 yards using the excellent open sights. Recoil was modest and reliability was 100%. Group sizes averaged about 2.5 inches, with the best 5-shot group at an impressive 1.61 inches.

Encore Pro Hunter

Weighs only 5 lbs. 15 oz. empty and without optics and measuring just 34 inches long, the Encore Katahdin Pro Hunter is a light, compact, fast handling and versatile rifle capable of taking any game in North America.
